film story and video production

My clients are scientific institutes, broadcasters, governments, companies, communication departments and agencies.

A wide range of topics

People sometimes ask how I can make films about so many different and complex topics. Admittedly, the range of topics presented here is wide. The answer is: I am not an expert on the subjects of my films but an expert on films. I rely on experts who can share and transmit their knowledge and protagonists who can emotionally convey their experiences.

Let me show you some examples - or case studies - of my work.

biology and medicine

This is where it gets fundamental. We dig deep into our cells and try to understand the rules of our biology. In recent years, I have worked with basic researchers to produce animated films that explain, for example, how cannabis works on our synapses, how cells can be turned back into stem cells, how the Crispr/Cas9 gene cleaves RNA or how RNA interferes protein synthesis in cells. These technologies in particular represent paradigm shifts in biology and medicine and will have far-reaching consequences in medicine and agriculture in the future. This is why they have recently become part of the curriculum in schools.

I have also produced films about antibiotics and other vaccines, tropical diseases, nerve diseases, organ transplants and pain. These medical films often focus on the personal stories of those affected.

Here’s a playlist of some films (trailers) I produced for FWU- Medieninstitut der Länder (media institute of the federal states of Germany).

german grammar

This is fun! How do you explain the admittedly sometimes somewhat complex German grammar to primary school pupils in an online course – without being totally exhausting? The FWU – Medieninstitut der Länder (media institute of the federal states of Germany): asked for animation videos teaching German grammar for 1st graders.

Deutsch macht Spaß’ (German is fun!) is an animated series that I developed for German lessons in German-speaking schools. The characters Nina and Samuel are friends and have adventures in the jungle of German grammar. The animation artist Svetlana Rybkina from Berlin developed the characters.

social and political issues

What kind of society do we want? One in which everyone has as many equal opportunities as possible? One in which people treat each other with respect? One in which trust prevails?  Or a corrupt, disrespectful and unjust one?

In this context, I have made films about truth and lies, epistemology, social media, electoral systems, migration, the role of free press, big data or  cybercrimes.

Here’s an example on the topic of animal welfare: a portrait of the world-famous autistic cattle expert Professor Temple Grandin from Colorado. Temple Grandin has managed to bring the issue of animal welfare to cattle breeding and slaughterhouses in the USA.

Or a documentary about fish welfare: Fish are subject to exactly the same animal welfare laws as chickens, pigs or cows – for which much has been done in recent years. But fish are usually tortured to death. Why don’t we feel sorry for fish? And how could fish consumption be made more animal-friendly?

“Wenn Fische sprechen könnten” (If fish could speak) two different formats available:

interview in an electric aircraft 1000m over Oslo

The agency “Die Firma. experience design” reached out to me to produce short web videos to communicate the sustainability strategy of Norways airport group AVINOR. Helping an aviation operator to communicate sustainability might sound like greenwashing for critical journalists since aviation is a big contributor to the CO2 problem. But after first meetings I developed an understanding of the true commitment of Norways state airport operator. We made portraits of managers of AVINOR letting them tell their story of leading the company on a sustainable ‘runway’.

One of these interviews where quite exciting as we flew in the first all-electric aircraft over Oslo.

“simply deliver” - communicating for Deutsche Post DHL

The press department of Deutsche Post DHL AG in Bonn approached me with the request to produce videos which explain their new business models and services such as E-POST (safe encrypted e-mail service), the Electroreturn system to help recycle more electronic garbage or the messenger app SIMSME. We worked closely together ‘simply delivering’ a series of explanatory videos and testimonials of users of those new services within a very short timeframe.

biomimicry and bionik

Here is a series of 4 X 56 minutes I did for ARTE (production company beetz-brothers, Berlin) about Biomimicry which translates to ‘learning from nature’ in design and engineering. Engineers from Berlin started this in the 80ies, called it Bionik and from then these ideas crawled slowly as a snail around the globe. The author Janine Benyus from Montana took it a step further and coined the term Biomimicry. Have a look at a snippet here.

paleogenetics, paleoontology, anthropology and a nobel prize

As a sociologist, I am interested in how we organise our coexistence – but I am also interested in how our species has become the way it is – with all its deficits.

One example of films from this field is the groundbreaking discovery of a method for sequencing very old DNA. This was achieved over 25 years ago by Svante Pääbo, who later won the Nobel Prize. At the time, I had the honour of making a long film about his research.

children documentary

And finally, maybe my personal favourite: “Alba dances flamenco”. A portrait about a young girl from Málaga who goes to a dance conservatory and loves to dance flamenco. A documentary for german public television series “Schau in meine Welt” (Have a look at my world, 2015).
